Putting industrial boilers back to work in workplaces that have been shuttered

The UK government has changed its advice on the approach to the coronavirus pandemic. With the new message ‘Stay alert, Control the virus, Save lives’, more workplaces are being encouraged to re-open. One area of the economy which has been particularly highlighted is manufacturing, which needs to be kickstarted for any economic recovery to take place. Many facilities with large industrial boilers will have been closed during the earlier phase of lockdown. In this blog, we look at putting industrial boilers back to work.

A time for careful planning rather than installation

Whatever inputs and products are involved, we understand the importance of industrial boilers in manufacturing processes. Indeed, process heating is vital in many industries, accounting for up to 40% of annual UK industry’s energy costs. It may involve physical or chemical change, or it may focus on cleaning and sterilisation. Restarting industrial boilers for such process heating will be essential for manufacturing to recover.

To provide a safe and healthy workplace, manufacturing companies will also need access to hot water. Not least, this is essential in order for all employees to be able to follow advice around handwashing. This will help to deliver an ongoing reduction in the spread of coronavirus, in addition to such measures as social distancing.

Hodgkinson Bennis are experts in the installation, commissioning, repair, and ongoing maintenance of industrial boilers. We recognise that right now few organisations will be looking to move ahead with new industrial boiler plant installation. But for some older systems, it will still be a good idea to think about designing a new system or modifying existing plant to meet longer-term carbon reduction goals. It may mean a more efficient hot water or water treatment system to ensure compliance with the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD).

Putting industrial boilers back to work quickly and efficiently

For most of our clients, and especially ones with industrial boilers, the focus at the moment is on maintenance and repair. Whether it’s the boiler itself or the pipework for water, steam and gas services, we’ll keep your boiler system running at peak efficiency. We’ll always undertake health and safety management to make sure that no staff or contractors on site are put at risk. Of course, this means respecting social distancing rules and the correct use of PPE.

Maintaining HVAC systems to keep cool air flowing

For many manufacturing companies, it’s also vital to cool air as well as heat water. Beyond boilers, we can maintain and repair heating ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC). Even if we haven’t designed your entire HVAC system, we can maintain the air handling unit (AHU), which is the central element which regulates and circulates air. Our maintenance engineers will keep the unit working by putting together a maintenance schedule and undertaking repairs where necessary.

Thinking about the future for industrial boilers

The period of lockdown has encouraged many organisations to accelerate plans to use communications and data technology more fully. For the manufacturing and other industrial sectors, ‘Industry 4.0’, or the fourth industrial revolution, was already gathering pace. We can ensure that the latest energy-efficient boilers sit at the heart of any organisation’s efforts to automate. And we can fit smart heating and hot water control systems, which you can integrate into other digital systems you might invest in.

If you need to think about putting industrial boilers back to work, then look no further than us. But we’ll also be able to help you start thinking again about the longer term and how to future-proof boiler and HVAC systems. Bouncing back sustainably from the coronavirus-related slowdown will require some innovative thinking, and we’re here to help out. #IndustrialBoilers #BackToWork #EngineeringExcellence #ServiceAndRepairs
