HVAC covers heating and cooling and everything in between

April 18, 2019

In modern buildings, cooling is often as important as heating. The amount of IT equipment on site produces large amounts of waste heat. What’s more, building design often means that windows can’t be opened and airflow must be controlled by technology. That’s why it’s increasingly common to talk about heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) as a single system.

We can design an HVAC system for any building, whether it’s brand new or is an older design. And we’ll do it in a way that responds to the building’s occupancy throughout the week, both on weekdays and weekends. We’ll test the system before it goes live, to ensure that it quickly reaches optimum temperature. We’ll make sure to fit the latest in control equipment, so you can rely on your thermostats to keep the temperature just right. And we can keep the air flowing with a regular maintenance schedule.

Air Handling Unit (AHU) installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance

For many HVAC systems, the air handling unit (AHU) is the central element which regulates and circulates air. The AHU takes in outside air, reconditions it and supplies it as fresh air to the air-conditioned room. It does so by filtering, and either heating or cooling it. Even if we haven’t designed your entire HVAC system, we can install, test and commission an AHU should you need one. And our maintenance engineers will keep the unit working by putting together a maintenance schedule.

Whatever your needs with regards to building works, we’re able to help you out. Whether it’s designing a new plant room, or repairing a wall after a pipe burst, our builders can make your building look as good as new. We can rationalise internal space to meet your changing needs as an organisation, and really make your premises work for you.

A leisure centre provides a working example of HVAC

It’s not just customers expending energy at your leisure centre. If you run a leisure centre, you know that energy is second only to labour in your costs. It usually accounts for some 30% of the total. But different groups of customers have different needs. While you need to keep your swimmers warm out of the pool, you have to maintain the water at just the right temperature. And in the gym and sports hall, you want to keep the perfect balance of air temperature too.

According to the Carbon Trust, heating, ventilation and hot water is by far the biggest contributor to energy costs at a typical UK leisure centre. It accounts for around 60%. Across the sector as a whole, this amounts to an estimated £700 million. So any way in which your leisure facility can become more energy efficient will not only care for the environment, but will improve your bottom line.

If you’re serious about reducing long-term energy usage at your leisure centre, get Hodgkinson Bennis in to help.
